In April 2011, Anthony was interviewed about the design process behind Claudelands:

“Our brief was, within budget constraints, to design a world-class venue and we were determined to make sure we delivered a facility for the city of Hamilton that could lay claim to be the best in Australasia,” said Flannery. “The city has been an integral part of the whole project from its inception and the fact that Hamilton can now boast a facility that stands comparison with the best facilities in the world is tantamount to the talent, creativity and passion of a wide range of fantastic people in the city.”

“With the location being a short 10 minute walk from Hamilton’s central business district part of the brief was to develop the design in the context of a wider strategy that would improve connectivity with the heart of Hamilton city,” he added.

Who are your current clients?
We have a diverse set of customers ranging from a car wash in the Philippines to a shoe shine company in Dubai. The beauty of being web-based is having unlimited access to international markets and currently we actually have more overseas customers than local ones. We also service a lot of cafes and some B2B clients.

Do you have any special business milestones or events coming up this year?
Launching a rebranded website and set of innovative product features, attending offshore conferences as well as a focus on creating more presence and awareness in the NZ market.

What brings you to Generator? Is it the networking opportunities, the physical space, the community of business based here, or something else (like Janine Pye)?
All of the above. We used to be based in the Biz Dojo in K-Rd which was great but we find this location more suitable for our requirements.

How do you think Generator will support and/or facilitate the growth of your business?
We find the networking and skill-pooling opportunities invaluable, and this is something we tapped into in our last shared office space.

Which of the Generator facilities do you plan to make use of and how do you think they will assist you in running your business? (I.e. Lounge area, meeting rooms, reception, events, technology, accounting, etc.)
All of the above (ok, and maybe we’ll tap into happy hour too!)

How has Generator supported and/or facilitated the growth of your business?
We appreciate having a friendly professional working environment and it’s great to have the services you’d expect at a much bigger workplace even though there’s only two of us in Auckland. We like that we can meet our clients on ‘home turf’ in the meeting rooms and lounge and our clients appreciate getting away from their offices and coming somewhere inspirational.
Regularly catching up with the other residents is also great – sharing ideas and generally getting different perspectives.

Which of the Generator facilities do you make use of and how do they assist you in running your business? (I.e. Lounge area, meeting rooms, reception, events, technology, accounting, etc.)
Lounge, meeting rooms, reception, IT networking/printing/telephones, Generator staff smilie-ness. All these help us convey a professional yet relaxed image to our clients

BONUS QUESTION: If you could have a super power what would it be?
Ali: I would go for the ability to travel through time :)
Paul: I would like to be able to breathe under water!!

Generator Inspires: Powered by Unitec

A stimulating new collaboration between business and education, with the best students from a range of disciplines coming together to create the workspace of the future, is unfolding inside one of Auckland’s most inspirational shared business spaces.

The Generator Project, a recently launched collaboration between Generator and Unitec, involves a talented group of Unitec students learning and working within the popular Generator shared business space in Britomart. The Unitec student group’s first task as part of the project is to come up with a cross-disciplinary idea of how the workspace of the future might look.

Ryan Wilson, CEO of Generator, says: “The Generator Project is taking the entrepreneurial, collaborative environment we provide for our members to the next level, through setting this ambitious goal for the Unitec student group. I’m looking forward to seeing the end result – after all, what business person or creative type hasn’t given at least a little thought to how the spaces we work in will change over the next ten or fifteen years?”

Unitec’s CEO is equally excited about the Generator Project, which is the first of its kind for the university: “Finding ground-breaking ways of partnering with business helps to ensure Unitec is at the forefront of emerging theories and technologies,” says Unitec Chief Executive Rick Ede. “Projects like the Generator provide Unitec students with an innovative learning environment and work-based learning opportunities, helping to ensure they are work-ready when they graduate.”

As part of the project, Generator has also become the venue and host for an exciting line-up of events – the Generator Inspires: Powered by Unitec speaker series. The talks aim to inspire discussion around the question: What does the workspace of the future look like?
